The Black Nativity by Langston Hughes

Performance Dates: December 10, 11, 12 and 18th

The Christmas story in dialogue, narrative, pantomime, gospel song and folk spirituals- the unique creation of the poet and playwright Langston Hughes.

Direction: Ashley Collins

Choreographer: Eboni Graham

 

Roles: Storytellers, Singers, Dancers, Community

 

Storytellers, Singers, and Community: Please prepare a 1 minute monologue and 16 bars of a gospel or folk spiritual.

 

Dancers: Come in comfortable clothes and shoes and be prepared to do a short movement audition.

 

Rehearsals: Rehearsals will begin in late October and will be on Mondays-Thursdays between 7-10 PM at Uptown Stage. There may be a few Saturday or Sunday rehearsals.

 

Black Butterfly, Jaguar Girl, Pinata Woman, and Other Superhero Girls Like Me by Luis Alfaro

Based on the writings of Alma Cervantes, Sandra C Munoz, Marisela Nortes

Performances Dates: January 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 2022

Five girls living in the urban streets of east L.A. discover the growing pains, strange absurdities and amusing experiences of adolescence life.

 

This play will be presented in a series of monologues, vignettes and poetry interludes. Script is primarily in English but has various Spanish terms and sayings throughout for each character.

 

New Tampa Players is partnering with Tampa City Ballet to provide a theatrical and dance experience piece.

 

Looking for those that can play and appear to be ages 12-17. High school students are encouraged to audition. 

 

Characters:

Raquel: wants to be a writer but struggles to express herself. Close relationship with her mom.

 

Dolores: confident but has a rough family life. Has a love/hate relationship with the opposite sex.

 

Monica: Mexican, self conscience about appearance but has great ambitions about her future.

 

Jasmine: doesn’t understand the opposite sex but loves her baby nephew

 

Sylvia: Mexican, responsible and loves her family but gets in trouble unknowingly

 

Please prepare a 1 minute monologue.

All auditionees are asked to wear a mask during the audition.

 

Directions to Uptown Stage: Once on the campus of the University Mall, park in front of the K&G Fashions main mall entrance. Enter the mall through the entrance between K&G Fashions and Famous Footwear. Turn right at the children’s playspace inside the mall. Uptown Stage is the fourth space on the left.

 

New Tampa Players is producing these pieces with the generous support of Hillsborough Arts Council, Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners, and Florida State Division of Cultural Affairs
